August is the heart of the Sardinian summer: the sea is at its warmest point of the year, the days are long, and the La Maddalena archipelago is at its liveliest. It's also the busiest month — one more reason to know how to plan around it.
The warmest sea of the year
After months of sun, August brings the warmest water of the season: it's the best time for snorkelling, and for kids, who can stay in the water longer without getting cold.
Book well ahead
August — and especially the week around Ferragosto (August 15th) — is the busiest period of the year: boat tour availability fills up faster than in June or July. If your travel dates are set, booking a few weeks ahead means you get to choose the itinerary and time slot you actually want.
How to avoid the crowds
The most famous coves — Cala Coticcio, Porto della Madonna, the Pink Beach — are also the busiest in August. A boat tour has a real advantage here: you can reach lesser-known coves, or head out early in the morning, when beaches reachable only by sea are still nearly empty.
Sunset, the best part of the day
With August heat, many prefer sailing during the cooler hours: early morning for snorkelling, late afternoon for swimming and sunset. Punta Tegge, on La Maddalena island, remains one of the most loved spots to end the day.
After Ferragosto
The last two weeks of August stay warm with excellent sea conditions, but with noticeably fewer tourists than the Ferragosto week — a good compromise for anyone who still wants peak-summer weather with a bit more calm.
